Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Outline the US burden of meningococcal disease and the populations at greatest risk for invasive disease
  • Utilize meningococcal disease epidemiology and active surveillance networks data representing US disease incidence  
  • Chart N. meningitides serogroups associated with US disease incidence and their cyclical fluctuations
  • Discuss the importance of immunologic response to vaccination and duration of protection
  • Describe characteristics of current and emerging choices for meningococcal vaccination in patient populations  at increased risk for invasive disease
